The rise of the electric car

Posted On 14-08-2017

The United Kingdom government has announced its intention to ban all sales of diesel and petrol cars and vans by 2040. France and Norway have also decided to take action in order to tackle air pollution.
In the UK, only 1% of the total number of cars on the road is electric or hybrid. This ratio is significantly higher in Norway (40%), as a result of the incentives provided by the government.

Action plan:

  • Ban all sales of diesel and petrol cars and vans by 2040 in France and the UK.
  • Ban all sales of diesel and petrol cars and vans by 2025 in Norway.

Electric car use in United Kingdom
The popularity of electric cars in the UK has shot up over the last few years, with more than 100,000 plug-in vehicles on the road, compared with just 3,500 in 2013. This huge increase in electric cars in 2017 has come about because of a greater level of choice for drivers, a shift in the public’s attitude towards electric cars and a constantly improving public recharging network. Combined, this means that UK electric car buyers have a greater selection of vehicles to choose from than ever before.

Cost per mile
Right now the price of electric cars isn’t competitive enough, compared to petrol cars. Due to decreasing battery prices, a longer lifetime and lower maintenance costs, the expectation is that from 2024 the costs per driven mile will become cheaper. Because leasing and car sharing is becoming popular, the cost per mile will be more important than the purchase price.

Charging infrastructure
With more electric cars on the road a proper charging infrastructure is essential. To accommodate the load requirements of all electric cars, sufficient charging stations must be installed. The role of the installer is becoming increasingly important in this regard.
Libra Energy is responding to these developments by offering an EV charging solution to accommodate this need. KEBA produces charging stations suitable for homes and (semi) public locations. This product consists of an enclosure that can be mounted to a wall or a pedestal.
